Charter bus etiquette mostly comes down to common courtesy, but there are a few group-travel-specific norms worth knowing — especially around boarding, seating, and gratuity.
These are the conventions our most-experienced group leaders follow. Following them makes the trip smoother, the driver happier, and the next trip cheaper (because the bus comes back clean).

The basics
Charter bus etiquette — the short list.
Board promptly
Bus departure times are real. Be at pickup 5 minutes early.
Find a seat and stay there
Switching seats mid-trip is fine on long trips, but not while the bus is moving.
Quiet on long legs
Headphones for personal audio. Voices down after dark or before dawn.
Clean up your area
Take your trash with you. Don't leave food wrappers, cups, or wrappers in the seat pockets.
Use the washroom thoughtfully
It's onboard for emergencies and long highway legs. Major business waits for stops where possible.
Tip the driver
10–15% of the trip cost. Cash is preferred. Hand it to the driver at the end of the trip.
Respect the driver's authority
On safety calls (no standing, no smoking, alcohol policy), the driver is in charge. Follow their lead.
Communicate as a group
One designated person handles communication with the driver. Ten people relaying conflicting messages = bad trip.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what most groups want to know before they book.
10–15% of the trip cost is industry standard. On a $1,800 trip, that's $180–$270. Cash at the end of the trip is preferred.
Yes. The driver should know who their primary contact is, and that person should be physically near the front for quick consultation.
On most trips, no — use headphones. For a group party bus or wedding shuttle where the group has agreed, the bus speakers can be used.
Tell the driver immediately. Most coaches carry sick bags. The driver can pull over for a stop if needed.
Cash tip is the standard thank-you. Some groups also bring snacks/coffee for the driver on long trips — appreciated but not expected.
